How do I check out a book?

How do I check out a magazine?

  • Current issues of magazines are located on shelves on the downstairs library floor wall.
  • Magazines are also overnight checkouts for teachers only.  Students are not allowed to check out magazines.

What can I use the computers for?

  • Be sure to turn in your “Acceptable Use Policy” to your homeroom teacher, so you will have access to the Library computers.
  • OPAC is the program used to find Library books. The icon for OPAC looks like a stack of library books with a magnifying glass beside it.   INFOTRAC is the program used to find magazine articles online.  It has an icon that is a white square with an “e” for Explorer on it with “Infotrac” typed underneath the small white square.  If you should be asked for a password for Infotrac, it is “elvis” in lower case letters.
  • Computers may also be used to access the Internet. Be sure to only use good quality, reliable websites for research purposes.
  • Email can only be accessed if it’s needed for a school assignment.

What if I turn in something late?

  • We do not charge overdue fees for late books; we just thank you for turning them in,  even if they are overdue..

What else do I need money for?

  • Printing—when working on an assignment, three pages are allowed…no charge.  However, any project over three pages costs 10 cent a page.
  • Copier—Students may not use the Xerox copier for their projects.  Ms. McKee, in the copy room, will copy it for you at a cost of 10 cents a page.

Where can I find a fiction book?

  • Fiction books and novels are located upstairs in the Media Center and contain stories that are made up or not real.  They are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.  Large black letters/numbers located on the walls above the book shelves denote the Dewey Decimal locations. There are several paperback racks located downstairs.
  • Story collection books are also located upstairs on a shelf (clearly marked) near the upstairs entrance to the media center.

Where are the nonfiction books?

  • Nonfiction books contain information that is real or factual and are located downstairs.
  • Nonfiction books are arranged by Dewey decimal number starting with 001 all the way to 999. Numbers correspond to subjects (ex: all the books about insects can be found at 595.7)

Where are the reference books?

  • Reference books are books you can quickly “refer” to for factual information like specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, etc.  Most of the reference books are located on shelves in the Reference Room.

Arranged by Dewey decimal number with an “R” in front for reference starts with R 001 and ends with R 999. (ex: reference books about insects can also be found at R 595.7—the Dewey numbers in reference match the Dewey numbers in nonfiction)

  • Books about different careers and professional books on teaching and education are kept in the library reference room.
